Something To Be Proud Of

I know many parents have enjoyed the back to school quiet that has been recently afforded them. At times I hear them speaking of a day of peace and quiet and I wonder what that would be like - no children for a few hours every week day. Then the big yellow cheese wagon screeches around our corner and I see my children watch it pass. Then we take out our books and begin our day.

Yes, craziness sometime ensues. "Mom, I don't get this." "Do I have to write a whole page or can I just do a few sentences?" "How do you spell mitochondria?" "I need to take my spelling test." "Mom, tell D to scoot over." Very often all of this happens at once. Ahhh, it makes my head spin!

But, I am happy to say, those moments are short lived as I remember and reflect on the good times. I was there when each of my children first rolled over. I have pictures forever stored away in my mind of each of their first steps. I heard their little voices when they read out loud for the first time. I taught them how to do that. I taught them to ride their bikes. I am blessed daily to hear things like, "Mom did you know that ..." or "Wow, Mom this is neat!"

Yes, there a times when I feel like I would love to have the children dress and load up on the big yellow bus so I could get a few hours of quiet and a clean living room. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have two incomes. I could get my nails done, have the carpet replaced with hard wood, have a bigger house or buy things for my family that we just do not get with me staying home. Then there are quiet moments like this one, moments when I can count my blessings. This year we have a 10th grader, a 9th grader, a 5th grader and a 1st grader and do you know what? I am glad they are home. I would even go so far as to say,"I am proud to be a homemaker, a wife and a homeschooling mom."
