Another Project

I am currently working on appliqueing this t shirt to go with the pajama pants I made earlier this week. The circles are pinned down right now but later I will hand stitch them into place and leave the edges to fray. Sew Cute! My mom came over last night and she laid out circle while I cut them out. I can not wait to see the finished project.

All For Me

This week I did something that is rare for me. I purchased something for myself. This cute little ring is made by Polly at FaraField. I window shop at ETSY all the time but this little ring had to be mine. This ring is made of sterling silver wire wrapped around chalcedony. I do not honestly know what that is but it is clear, blue and beautiful and ---mine---.

The weather is warm - OK - hot here in the deep south and the colors in this ring say snow and cooler weather. When I first saw it I wanted to pull out my sweaters. Funny thing is, if I had found this ring in March or April I would have instantly thought of beaches and warmer weather. I think this will be a piece of jewelry that I will wear year round, if my 13 year old is not borrowing it.

Thanks Polly For making it for me.

Annie was right...

"Yesterday was plain awful!
You can say that again.
Yesterday was plain awful
but that's not now
That's then.

Oh, The sun will come out tomorrow."

Yesterday was CRAZY busy. The children set out to do their school work and, since I had sat up late the night before to make sure everything was in proper order, I assumed that it would be a great day to sew. ...and it was, I just over did it a little.

Maybe you have had one of those days like this. Washer repair guy calls and says he is 30 minutes away from your house, every one of the kiddos needs help with math, you have three sewing projects that you want to get finished today and to top it off, husband comes home late and you have a mandatory teachers meeting at your school at 7:00. AAaaahhh!

Again, it was crazy busy so at some point- I forget just when - we put everything aside for a couple hours and watched a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie. Just like the song, the sun was shining again and my cloudy, chaotic, overly busy day turned into a peaceful, satisfying, and sunshiny day. Is it not true that attitude is everything? I was able to enjoy the day at home with my beautiful children, my husband did come home (and with groceries), my washing machine works now and I finished the three sewing projects. Hip Hip Hooray!!!

One of the projecst I finished yesterday was this pair of Pajama pants. I will be listing them in my Etsy shop and on my website. They turned out nicely I think. The mustard, chocolate, olive, and plum colors are perfect for fall. Next week I hope to embellish a t-shirt to match and I promise that I will not make it one of three or four projects to be done in one day.

A Little Plug for Homeschooling..and Etsy

The area where we live now is drenched and wind blown from the recent tropical storm Fay. Schools were cancelled and businesses closed due to weather, but our little home school pressed on.

One of my favorite subjects is history and our son is currently studying Ancient Rome. At this point in his studies he is learning about games children played and the toys they played with. Thus the above project was born. These are trigons, originally balls made of whatever you can get your hands on. As you can see our two youngest made three balls, each with different centers but each wrapped in the same type cloth. In his studies D learned that the game trigon was played much like hot potatoes with the players - trigonalias - standing in a triangle and tossing the ball around to each other.

This brought me to another type of ball and a different culture. Tiny beautiful balls that Asian mothers used to give to their children at birthdays and special holidays. These tiny balls were made of threads collected from the children's kimonos as they outgrew them. The threads were gently and lovingly wrapped until a ball was formed then beautiful designs were woven into them and the ball was placed in the crib of the young child for special occasions. The temari ball
was a beautiful reminder of the love of a mother and child. I saw these modern Temari balls on ETSY last week and loved the story behind these little handmade jewels. What a sweet tradition.

Our homeschooling allowed us to make beautiful crafts and ETSY provided us with a look into yet another family tradition and our bout with Fay could not stop our learning about other cultures. All this and Math, Reading, Science and Phonics too. Life is Good!!!
